Munising is located in the heart of the Hiawatha National Forest, is the entry point to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and features Grand Island National Recreational Area (.5 miles from shore). It is only 40 miles east of Marquette, which is the U.P.’s largest town. With a population of just over 2,500, it has a small-town charm but bustles with many activities throughout the year. The downtown area has multiple stores and giftshops, with some open year-round, and lots of restaurants that have local favorites like pasties and whitefish, with some open year-round.
In the summer Munising is a fantastic place to hike with over 15 waterfalls located around town, most being an easy ability level because paved trails and wood walkways. There are also 5 lighthouses and several beautiful recreation areas nearby. See the Pictured Rocks by boat cruise or kayak and relax on sand beaches on the coast of Lake Superior. With nicer weather, June through August is the best time to visit and is peak tourist season.
In the fall the Upper Peninsula turns into a foliage-lovers dream. The hills surrounding Munising are red, yellow, and orange with adds so much beauty to hiking and sight-seeing. The cooler weather means you will need to bundle up but makes the forest's smell sweeter.
In the winter Munising becomes paradise for snowmobilers and ice-climbers. With easy access to many trails, these sites are perfect for the winter adventure getaway. Although less shops and restaurants are open, the winter scenery is breath-taking with snow on the evergreens and ice shimmering on the lake.
